Charlemont Mall Hotel

Charlemont Hotel is a new four star hotel accommodating c.181 bedrooms, restaurant, bar, gym and meeting room facilities. The hotel is located on the Grand Canal corridor in Dublin 2 and overlooks the waterway and canal towpath. The new building also incorporates a protected structure, formerly known as St Ultan’s hospital, within the centre of the plan providing character and historical layering to the hotel. The original relationship of this 18th century building to Charlemont Street is being restored through the removal of insensitive additions and the creation of a new landscaped forecourt. The new building is organised around a new atrium which accommodates the reception and foyer of the new hotel while providing a clear relationship between buildings of different periods. Panoramic lifts bring guests from the atrium to the upper floors.

The new building has been carefully composed to respond sensitively to the scale, rhythm, texture and variety of the surrounding context while providing a dense and vibrant use to this underused site. The building is designed to re-engage with Charlemont Mall, the Grand Canal and Charlemont Street.

The brick and stone facades relate in character and texture to the rich architectural heritage of the Grand Canal which was an important transport artery in the 18th century and which is now a new developing to be an important green space in the modern city. A rich landscape scheme has been developed for the external spaces to complement the mature setting of the Canal.
