CIT Arena is a multipurpose arena designed to facilitate sports events, conferences, exams, exhibitions, banquets, classes, and concerts at Cork Institute of Technology Campus in Bishopstown, Cork.
The building is carefully situated at a nodal point between the main campus body to the east and the outdoor sporting facilities to the north. At this pivotal location in the campus, the design places strong emphasis on connecting the building back to the main campus and the sports facilities.
The dramatic curved glass facade of the building hugs the outdoor running track and augments a heavily utilised route between the sports fields, car park, and main campus. This landmark building orientates visitors and fits into the overall master plan for the campus.
The brief was to design a fully inclusive building which can be used by all members of CIT as well as the wider community. Internally, robust and high quality natural materials are used such as exposed concrete, metal, and solid timber. Soft furnishings, bold colours, and natural light give added warmth to the spaces. The minimalist and pure interior creates a sense of functionality yet warmth and solidity in the building. A generous double height café/foyer space offers a relaxed and inviting entrance to the building.
